Preparing for the MAD Blog Awards

It’s the MAD Blog Awards on Friday. It’s exciting but overwhelming too, so I’ve been preparing myself mentally as well as with practical things.

I am bowled over to be a finalist in not just one but two categories: Best Writer, and Outstanding Contribution.

The Outstanding Contribution finalists were revealed only two weeks ago; we were informed via a very touching email.

The citation on the Tots100 website made me cry. It reads…

What you said: “The Headspace Perspective blog is sharing personal stories following the death of baby Hugo and making people feel they’re not alone. Leigh’s campaigning with #HugosLegacy and #Matexp is powerful, incredibly moving and inspirational.”

I don’t know who nominated me, but thank you.

Everyone nominated for any kind of award probably says this, but while winning would be fantastic, the knowledge that my work has been recognised is a tremendous accolade.

After all, Hugo’s Legacy and #MatExp is about raising awareness, so my work being recognised is invaluable.

For all the times I have felt like I am just shouting in to a cave, for all the times I felt like packing it all in to live a quiet and less stressful life, for all the times I felt sick as I hit the ‘publish’ button.

Knowing Hugo will never, ever be forgotten is a comfort to me.

Me and Hugo

My fellow Outstanding Contribution finalists are fantastic. They have been nominated for a diverse range of things – do take a look to find out about the wonderful things they have done and are continuing to do. It is a real honour to be named amongst them.

The Best Writer finalists were announced back in June with the rest of the other categories – I was incredibly proud to be listed against some fantastic writers. We all have different styles, and write about mostly different things, which means in my mind we’re all winners irrespective of whose name is called on the night.

Being a finalist in this category brought mixed emotions for me – besides being so proud, it is bittersweet because I have long wanted my writing to be recognised, but it is only since Hugo died that I have really got it out there. Writing my blog is my way of telling the world about my beautiful Hugo but I also enjoy writing about all sorts of other things too, exploring issues and trying to make people think. The number of people who have contacted me to tell me my writing has touched them in some way is amazing and no matter what the outcome on Friday, is tribute to my work.

Friday will be spent getting my hair done first thing in the morning (I need my grey roots to be touched up!). I will no doubt have a stress-relieving laugh with my fabulous hairdresser. I’m planning to have a restful morning after that, and start to get ready in the afternoon. I have my dress, shoes, bag and other accessories all ready! It’s a short trip on the train in to London for me, fortunately.

I am so excited and looking forward to seeing many lovely friends at the awards – definitely the highlight for me! Some I have met before, while others I have yet to meet (although it feels like I know them really well already!).

Roll on Friday!

Have you signed up for the Headspace Perspective
