Today’s Sunday Thought is a very simple one. Be gentle with yourself.
It’s a simple thought that is relevant for everyone, whatever your stage in life, whatever you are doing, wherever you are going. We can be so very hard on ourselves trying to achieve often unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves, or piled on by others, or by society.
What would you tell a friend who was beating themselves up about a similar thing? I bet you’d be telling them they’re actually doing really well. You might suggest they do something, however small, to be gentle to themselves, give themselves a break.
Why do we find it so hard to treat ourselves as we would a good friend?
I don’t know.
It’s not always so simple, is it?
We can get ourselves in a maelstrom of thoughts, a tornado of self-torment that makes it difficult to be rational.
It’s all human. I used to beat myself up for everything that happened with Hugo. I then used to berate myself for beating myself up.
A huge vortex of a vicious circle.
It’s not easy, far from it. But bit by bit, you can break down whatever it is that is bothering you and find ways of dealing with it. Dependent on what your worries or torments are they might not ever go away.
It’s about finding a way of trying to manage them as far as you can. Trying to not let the torment win.
What will you do to be gentle with yourself today, and reassure yourself you are doing the best you can?
